Phunk Junkeez (Interview with Soulman Front MC for The Phunk Junkeez)
Official Site |

NR: You guys play all most anywhere. Is there any place you guys refuse to play?

Soulman: Unless the security are dicks or something is wrong with the promoter we will play. We usually get kicked out or barred from places before we refuse to play them.

NR: How did you guys come to sign with Suburban Noize?

Soulman: I knew Kevin Zinger who owns SRH clothing. He use to promote shows back in the early days. We started hooking up with the Kottonmouth Kings a lot. Then we got out of are major deal and wanted something indie. It made sense for us to start rockin with the Noize. They offered us a deal and we jumped on it.

NR: Do you guys have a booking agent or do you still book yourselves?

Soulman: We mange ourselves. We book ourselves. We do everything ourselves.

NR: With the internet letting people download your music for free do you think it's a good idea or a bad one?

Soulman: I think it's a good idea. Bands like us that are not platinum selling artists have nothing to lose by people downloading our music. We have everything to gain. It's a good thing.

NR: Here is something the Juggalo's wanted to know. You guys have toured with ICP in the past on The Juggalo Fun House Tour. Will the Phunk Junkeez ever tour with ICP again?

Soulman: I don't know man. We almost did some dates with Twiztid a while back but we didn't end up getting to doing anything with them. We had a show scheduled with ICP in Phoenix that we never played. Something went wrong with the promoter. Joe and Joey are always so crazy, so you never know. We got love for the Juggalo's, we know that though. Either way we'll back around at some point or another.

NR: How do you feel about mainstream music?

Soulman: It doesn't really effect us. We are underground. Even a band like us, Kottonmouth, ICP, or a band like that, even if you get a little mainstream you're still underground.

NR: Why did you guys decide to put out the Junkeez 4 Life DVD?

Soulman: We want something that commemorates us. We have been picking up a lot of new fans that didn't know about our old stuff. So we wanted a DVD that tell kids about the old stuff as well as the new stuff. So we went to Japan did some touring over there, it shows our videos as well as our backstage shit. Just cool stuff.

NR: A Lot of your past CD's are hard to find. Is there a way for fans to get those CD's or should they just hunt them down?

Soulman: We are working on a "Best Of..." thru Suburban Noize. We are trying to get it out before the new record but it look like it will probably be after. We will be re-releasing a lot of them. You can get them at the merch booth at the shows. We have almost of all them, so we sell them at the shows. You can get them on the internet but stores rarely carry them.

NR: Is there any plans for a new Phunk Junkeez CD anytime soon?

Soulman: Yeah we have one coming out in September/October time. We are almost finished recording it right now.

NR: The Phunk Junkeez have been around a long time will you guys ever stop?

Soulman: No we don't have any job skills. All we know is how to rock the mic and jump off speakers and shit. None of us have degrees, so were Junkeez' for life. For real.

NR: As a fan that makes me happy!

Soulman: At this point people dig our music so we only getting bigger each year. Even though we have been doing this a long time we started small and we only keep getting bigger. It takes some bands a long time when you're not a sell-out bitch band. When you're not doing radio music a lot, it takes a long fucking time to get people to know your music. The only way we have is to play in front of five people and then they tell five people. You have to build it up that way. That's what the underground is all about. Big B has been local here since 187, You know you just have to turn it out.
