The Audition (Interview with Danny, Front Vocasl for The Audition)
Official Site |

NR: How did you get signed to Victory Records?

Danny: I actually wasn't in the band when they got signed to Victory. The story is that The Audition was shopping around for a label and they were trying to get signed. The first label that got back to them was actually Victory. Tony was like 'hey, I want to sign you guys.' So he came down to a practice and he really liked their stuff. I think within a week or two he had a contract wrote up and the rest is kind of history.

NR: Music currently is very image-oriented. Do you feel it should be more about music and less about your image? Let's say you guys were to come out wearing Fubu do you think kids would perceive you differently?

Danny: I definitely think image is a big factor in the industry. The way you look definitely has a way of getting people into you. If you check out PureVolume.com and look at the bands in the top spots on the charts they all have the same look. The bands that are really good that don't look very attractive or have that "look" will never be number one. Then the bands that no one has ever heard of and has broken up but they look the "part" are up at number one. I definitely think image has a lot to do with it. I don't think our band really focus' too much on image. We wear what we like. I do think if we started wearing Fubu and Lugz and stuff I think kids would definitely, whether conscious or unconscious, think they would look at us completely different. Think about if there was a rapper that came out and wore stuff like us. People would not take them seriously.

NR: How did you guys decide to choose the single "You've made us Conscious?" Is there any particular reason for it?

Danny: We liked the message we were sending with it. We thought it was the most diverse well rounded song on the record. We obviously like all the songs on the record or else they wouldn't be on it. I think we thought it would reach out to as many different genre's as possible.

NR: I read that June and you guys started a frat called "The Judition." What is it all about?

Danny: Basically we toured with June for two weeks about a month ago. We basically started this thing called "The Judition." It's a traveling fraternity. All us of are really big like "bro's" I guess you could say. We like to have a good time and get loud and rowdy and stuff. And you can guess all the other things that fraternity's typically do. That's pretty much where that came from. We were just out everyday having fun.

NR: You guys are from Chicago. What do you think you did to make yourselves stand out in a scene that is so immense?

Danny: We are really fan oriented. We will do whatever we can do to reach out to the crowd. We will always be in the crowd at shows. We intentionally do not bring a merch person so that way we can meet the fans and get to know their names and even have a one minute conversation or something. We all went to shows when we were younger. It wasn't disheartening, but it would have been so cool to go see our favorite bands and they were doing signings after the show or things like that. I really like the Movielife and one time I went to their show and Vinny was behind the merch table after the show. And I had so much more respect for them after that show. I know I wasn't friends with them but I felt like I had so much more of a connection with them after that. I felt like I had a better idea where they were coming from. We try to do that.

NR: How do you feel about an artist that has never really played a show before getting signed to a major label? Do you think artists should have to put in their time before they get signed or do you think it's fair-game?

Danny: Whoever gets signed. I don't think it should be about the touring. I think it should be about the music and if it's good or not. Or if the band has determination. Any band could have a million tours underneath their belt. It doesn't mean their good. It doesn't mean they suck either. They may be assertive but it doesn't mean people like it or will buy it.

NR: Myspace.com is a huge tool in the music industry. Do you feel you have to join this tool to have a chance of getting fans or do you think you could do perfectly fine without using it?

Danny: I think for bands that haven't used Myspace.com, such as Brand New and Taking Back Sunday, already had an established fan base before Myspace got huge. I don't think they need it because they already established a solid fan base before. For up-and-coming bands like us it's an amazing tool. Everyone can listen to your music all over the world. I mean there is PureVolume.com but everyone has a myspace. There is like some-odd-million people on it or something. So you can reach out to so many different people. Some band won't even build web sites anymore because Myspace has everything that they need. It has your pictures, your music, your shows and gives a way for people to contact you.

NR: If someone came up and offered you $30,000 towards your next record but they would design the art work and name the album, but you would not have to re-coup the cost, would you do it?

Danny: No. You have to do what you want. The money is good and all, but if your not doing what you want your not going to be happy doing it. It won't last and you won't like it. I would not do it.

NR: Out of all the artists you have toured with who is your favorite?

Danny: Favorite to play with, listen to, hang out or what?
NR: Favorite to tour with.
Danny: Definitely, definitely June. For sure June.

NR: If an artist gets all-over MTV do you think it's selling-out? Or do you think it's the next step?

Danny: Definitely the next step as an artist. What better way than Myspace and stuff to get your music out to people than national television. When you start a band your main goal is for people to hear your music. You don't want to write songs for no one to hear. And the people that really boycotting MTV is wrong. An artist doesn't sell 10,000 copies and say oh that's it. No one else can buy the record. Only those people can go to the shows. They want more people to listen to their music. Everyone wants their music out and there is no better tool than national television.

NR: If there was any one song that would drive you insane if it kept playing over and over again, who would it be?

Danny: That Juelz Santana "Whistle" song. That song drives me insane. Ooh My God. Defiantly that song.

NR: What are some of the CD's in your CD player?

Danny: Right now? I listen to a lot of Jason Mraz. I think he has an amazing voice and he definitely does a lot of different things with his music. I listen to a lot of I Am The Avalanche. We did some tour back with them and I really dug them. I also listen to Spoon and Travis. We just did a couple of shows with a band called Lorraine Drive. Check them out.

NR: What can your fans expect from you guys? More touring? Side projects? Going into the studio to record a new album?

Danny: Definitely more touring. We haven't had a break since July and we don't have a break until August. So we are pretty much trying to conquer the United States. We are trying to play as many shows as possible. Like with Mae we have had some days off but we just scheduled shows for those nights. We don't like having days off, we just love to play shows. There is no better way for us to enjoy ourselves than to just play.

NR: Do you have any last words, comments or opinions you want to get out?

Danny: Buy Our Record!
